Esperanza reached out to Jillian Joy to create a modern Cheongsam inspired Filipiniana dress to represent both her own as well as her husband’s heritage on their special day. She decided on a traditional Chinese red colour as well as a high neck, paired with Filipiniana butterfly sleeves on a slim fitting gown. We also added lace detailing over an illusion neckline as well as a chic slit.

“My wedding dress is a true piece of art. We had a Chinese wedding, but none of the cheongsams in stores fit me properly. Then I got pregnant, so that was an added complication. My dream had always been to marry in a terno, but I didn't think I would be able to find one in Toronto. I was overjoyed when I found Jillian Joy, and fell in love with her work. I asked her if she could make me a modern cheongsam with terno sleeves, and the final result was absolutely stunning. Jillian was really great at working with my growing belly, she was careful to select the right material and made sure that I felt comfortable. My dress was very lightweight and easy to move in, the last thing you want when you’re pregnant is to wear something restricting and heavy.

Jillian has a friendly and easy-going personality, she gives you advice if you ask for it, but otherwise is really keen on listening to what her client wants. I felt really comfortable communicating my needs to her. I will treasure this dress forever, it is a truly special one-of-a-kind piece with delicate details and a great deal of artistry.”
